Nine villages, and which ones are actually worth a morning

Anji has 180-odd villages and a national reputation for how they look. Half of them are photogenic and empty of anything to do. These nine earn the drive.

Quick answer

Short answer: with one free afternoon, choose Zhangwu (art, old walls, café lane) or Yucun (the green-village story, flat bike loop). With children, Lujia's farm train wins. If you want a village with no tourism at all, Shangshuwei is the honest answer — and there is nothing to buy there, which is the point.

鄣吴村Zhangwu village — Anji village
Artists & old walls

Zhangwu village

Whitewashed walls, brick-carved gateways and the boyhood home of Wu Changshuo, the painter-seal-carver who became the leader of the Shanghai art world. A 3.8 km culture walk links the house, the fan workshop and three cafés built inside century-old Huizhou houses.

余村Yucun village — Anji village
The green village

Yucun village

The village that closed its quarries and lime kilns and reinvented itself — the origin story of China's 'lucid waters and lush mountains' policy. Today: a cement-factory-turned-art-space, courtyard coffee, and a flat bamboo-lined cycling loop the whole family can ride.

鲁家村Lujia village — Anji village
Farm trains

Lujia village

Eighteen family farms linked by a narrow-gauge tourist railway. Children queue for the little train; adults queue for the strawberries. Best in spring and autumn, and the easiest 'village day' with small kids.

山川乡Shanchuan township — Anji village
Under the grass mountain

Shanchuan township

The valley directly below Yunshang Grassland: streams, narrow lanes, small guesthouses with mountain-facing balconies. If you want to be first up the ropeway in the morning, sleep here.

溪龙乡 · 黄杜村Xilong · Huangdu — Anji village
White tea

Xilong · Huangdu

Curved terraces of Anji white tea — pale leaves that brew a sweet, almost green-tea-like cup. Free tasting rooms in season, terrace cafés with a whole valley in front of them, and the best morning light in the county.

尚书圩村Shangshuwei village — Anji village
The quiet one

Shangshuwei village

A single road in, a thousand residents, mountains on three sides. Almost no commercial tourism — come for a walk, a bowl of noodles and the feeling of a village that has not been staged.

三官村Sanguan village — Anji village
With kids

Sanguan village

Home to Zhongnan Baicaoyuan: botanical garden, animal park and a valley fairground in one ticketed site. Not authentic China, but a genuinely good wet-day answer with children.

碧门村Bimen village — Anji village
Bamboo all the way up

Bimen village

An old mountain-gate village in a side valley of the eastern Tianmu range, bamboo on every slope. Two hours of lanes and a reservoir, and you will meet more chickens than tourists.

高家堂村Gaojiatang village — Anji village
Lake & lane

Gaojiatang village

A tidy lakeside village above Xianlong Lake, with wooden walks and a handful of restaurants. Easy add-on to a Tianchi or ski day.

How to do a village day

Slow is the only speed that works

Two villages, not five

Villages are 20–40 minutes apart on mountain roads. Three in a day means you photograph gateways and remember nothing.

Eat where they eat

A bowl of noodles at the village shop is ¥15 and better than the tourist restaurant at the gate. Ask your driver to order.

Ask before photographing people

Most villagers are pleased; some are not. A gesture at your camera and a nod is enough. Never photograph a ceremony in progress.
