Yunshang Grassland on a peak Saturday
We paid: ¥360 all-in (¥220 entry + ¥140 cable car) · ¥60 lunch on the meadow · ¥45 parking
What worked. Arriving at 15:30 was the whole trick: the cable car queue was 6 minutes, the meadow was half empty, and the lantern town lit up at 18:10 while everyone else was queuing to go down.
What did not. Between 10:30 and 13:00 the base station was genuinely unpleasant — 40-minute queue, no shade, and two tour groups chanting into a microphone. The glass skywalk added a 25-minute wait for a 90-second walk.
Verdict. Worth it, but only if you accept the ticket is one day: go up early, do the cliff park first, and let the lantern town be your exit rather than your arrival.

Shanghai → Anji by private charter, door to door
We paid: ¥1,300 for a 6-seat van, Hongqiao hotel to Shanchuan homestay
What worked. Left at 07:10, at the homestay by 09:55 with one toilet stop. Driver spoke workable English, had child seats when asked, and did not once suggest a jade shop.
What did not. The last 18 km is single-lane mountain road — two passengers felt queasy. Sitting in the back row is a bad idea on this route.
Verdict. The price is fair for what it removes: no station transfers, no taxi haggling with luggage, no 12:50-only bus.

The ¥110 shuttle from Hangzhou East station
We paid: ¥110 per person, 09:00 departure
What worked. Left on time, dropped us at the Yunshang visitor centre at 11:20. For a solo traveller this is the cheapest sane way to arrive.
What did not. Seats are not assignable, the coach fills by 08:45, and there is no luggage compartment for large suitcases. From the drop-off you still need a ¥60 taxi to most homestays.
Verdict. Best value for one or two people with backpacks; poor fit for families with big bags.

Deep Blue Plan, the mine-lake café
We paid: ¥68 including one coffee · ¥20 parking
What worked. The water really is that colour. Shade sails, cold brew, and a swimming-pool-blue edge that photographs exactly as advertised. 33 °C outside, comfortable inside.
What did not. ¥68 for a coffee is Shanghai pricing, seating is first-come and the lakeside benches go by 15:00. There is nothing else to do once you have taken the photo — plan 90 minutes, not an afternoon.
Verdict. Go for the image and one good coffee; pair it with Yucun village so the drive is not wasted.

Bamboo weaving with a 71-year-old master
We paid: ¥180 per person, 2.5 hours, basket taken home
What worked. Genuinely the highlight for the children — splitting bamboo, then weaving a base, with a master who corrected grips without a word of English and a translator who kept it funny.
What did not. The workshop is unheated in winter and the sharp step is adult-only. Two people in our group of six gave up halfway and watched.
Verdict. Book it. It is the only thing on this list you can take home and use.
