Bamboo is not a souvenir here. It is a skill.

Anji grows 1.3 million mu of bamboo and built an entire craft culture on it. These are the experiences our guests rate highest — and the only ones where you go home with something you made.

Quick answer

Short answer: the one experience to book is a bamboo-weaving workshop (2–3 hours, ¥120–260 per person) with a heritage inheritor — you finish a basket, fan or lampshade and take it home. Add bamboo-tube rice for lunch and, in March–April, bamboo-shoot digging. Most workshops are English-friendly with a translator, and children from about 6 years old can join.

The workshop, honestly

What actually happens in the two hours

Minute 0–20 · Splitting

You learn why bamboo is split, not sawn: a single culm becomes dozens of flexible strips. Expect to be bad at this at first.

Minute 20–80 · Weaving

Under the master's hands, the strips become a lattice. This is the part that quiets a room of noisy children.

Minute 80–120 · Finishing

Rim binding, trimming, and a stamp with your name. Your piece is packed flat for the flight home.

Practical: no experience needed, no English required beyond pointing, and the workshop is indoors — the best rain-plan in the county. Book 2–3 days ahead for weekend slots; groups over 8 need a week.
Beyond the workshop

Bamboo you can eat, ride and sleep in

Bamboo-tube rice

Glutinous rice, cured pork and sometimes mushroom steamed inside a fresh culm, then charred over coals. ¥60–120 and worth every yuan.

Bamboo-raft drifting

One raftsman, one pole, one slow hour between bamboo banks. About ¥100 per person; bring a hat and let the kids sit in front.

Bamboo-shoot season

March–April only: dig your own shoots with a farmer, then have the kitchen cook them for lunch. Muddy, seasonal, universally loved.

Straight answers

Is the workshop suitable for young children?

From about 6 years old with a parent helping. Under 6, the bamboo-carving and lantern-painting sessions are better — softer tools, shorter attention span.

Can we ship our pieces home?

Baskets and fans pack flat in a suitcase. Larger lampshades can be shipped by the studio, or we arrange courier from your homestay to most Southeast Asian cities in 5–7 days.

Do the masters speak English?

Rarely. We provide a translator or your guide interprets. The craft is visual enough that most guests stop needing words after ten minutes.

Where is the best workshop?

The Bamboo Expo Park studios are the most convenient and most English-ready. Independent village studios are warmer and cheaper but need booking through us.

Book a workshop with a real inheritor.

We hold slots at three studios and match the craft to your group — children, couples, or a corporate team that wants to leave with something other than a certificate.
